What is a Guardian Home for a Dog?

A guardian home for a dog is a program in which a breeding dog is placed in a permanent or temporary home with a family while it is in the breeder’s program. The dog remains with the guardian family as their pet, and the family is responsible for the dog’s care, well-being, and training.

The breeding rights are retained by the breeder for a certain period, and the dog may be called upon for health testing, breeding, and whelping puppies. The guardian family is responsible for the typical “pet” expenses and maintenance of the dog, including grooming, dog food, pet insurance, and pet-related vet care.

The dog remains the property of the breeder until the terms of the guardian contract are fulfilled, at which point ownership may be transferred to the guardian family. This arrangement allows breeders to expand their breeding programs while ensuring that their dogs receive individual attention and care in a loving family environment.
